Using This For Tortilla Dough? READ THIS.
This hand mill WILL grind nixtamal finely enough for tortillas that puff on the griddle like they’re supposed to. You’ll get much better results than from a food processor. But here are a few cautionary tips:1). When assembling the mill, screw the grinding plates as tightly together as possible. Otherwise the dough will not be fine or smooth enough. If too much play still remains between the plates, use a half-inch-diameter steel O-ring (not included) as a brace to keep the plates pressed tightly together.2). Although the mill comes with a fairly large attachable hopper, I actually believe it best not to use it for tortilla dough. Feed only a few tablespoons of rinsed nixtamalized corn into the mill at a time, dribbling in just a bit of water as you grind. You want to keep an eye on the process, and the mill’s main assembly includes a feeding area that’s the right size for this. Watch and monitor the corn as it moves down and along the large screw-shaped auger that guides the corn to the grinding plates.3). For masa that’s fine enough, you’ll probably need to grind it twice and possibly three times– again, keeping the plates tightly together, and again, feeding in just a couple spoonfuls at a time. On the second grind you’ll probably have to use a wooden spoon handle to occasionally coax the dough to the auger. A few drops of water will help, but not too much! Masa that’s wet and sticky won’t work. The process obviously requires some labor, and the final consistency will almost certainly be somewhat coarser than the silky-smooth texture you can achieve with the best masa harina. When pressed, the tortillas will have a more rustic, pebbly texture, but they will puff up on the griddle, and they will be tender. And if you’re wondering if freshly ground masa is dramatically superior to dough made from reconstituted masa harina, the answer is YES.

Crazy solid grain mill for the price….tempted to buy another one just to have…
This mill is awesome. I can’t believe it for the price. If this thing were made in the USA, it would be 3X the price at least. I’ve ground black beans and wheat berries through it so far. The picture is wheat berries (left) and the flour made from it using this grain mill (right). Will it make super fine flour like you buy at the store? No…But I think it can make it fine enough to make a coarser bread with, which is my goal here. The trick is to run whatever you’re grinding through it successively to get it finer and finer each time. Time consuming? Yeah, a little. But it’s fun work, and the kids love it. Also, super easy to assemble/disassemble to clean. After several time of use, no wear and tear is visible anywhere on the mill. I think this thing will last a long time as it’s built very solidly (all the tough parts are cast iron, the handle is real wood, the hopper seems like it’s aluminum, the bottom guard on the vice is rubber to keep from scratching any surfaces, and the only plastic piece is the little red cover). Very impressed and will probably buy another as back-up, for non-kitchen uses (like crushing up feed for young chickens).

Works Well
I ordered two of these grain mills (one as a gift) because they did not require electricity to operate (being prepared). Amazon offered the mill as used/like new at a reduced price, which generally means the original packaging was damaged in the warehouse but the product inside is intact. I have purchased many other products from them labeled this way and have been well pleased. This time I must say I was disappointed. Both the original boxes were severely damaged and taped together, then the shipping carton (no doubt due to the weight-they are heavy duty) was also damaged and taped extensively to keep it intact. One mill was okay once I removed the packaging and assembled it. The other, however had extensive damage to the hopper that holds the grain and would not fit onto the mill as it was designed to do. In checking about a return of the product I found I would have to drive a 70 mile round trip to a UPS Drop-off point in order to return it. Sooo, given the alternative, I elected to keep the mill and contact the manufacturer for a replacement part. I would highly recommend this grain mill as it is quite effective, but that said, I’d recommend passing on the reduced price offer for this item and getting it well packed and in good working order.

Overall good product.
Had to make minor adjustments, place locknuts on wing nuts to keep wing nuts from backing off while grinding. Mounted grinder to work bench in shop and we use this grinder to grind corn to feed the birds. PS the birds say thank you!!! and squirrel also.

Cracked Corn with Ease
This made the job of cracking corn for the chickens pretty easy.I do wish the plates could come a little further apart but the end product was pretty perfect!Going slowly made the size more uniform. We cracked about 2 gallons in less than an hour.We started with navy beans to clean any burs. Never saw a shaving. With all the grinding, the pieces that hold the plates loosened a little but tightened back up fine.I hope this will last years because it was so reasonably priced!

Great workout for ol’ farts like me.
Maybe it’s the table I have it attached to, but I feel like it will break the edge of the table off if I use it too much. Have to use the table bc the clamp doesn’t open enough to attach it to any of my kitchen counters. I don’t like how the hopper attaches to the grinder. It seems a little flimsy and its attachment has holes around the bottom where grains can leak through. It seems to work ok for coffee. Grains are very coarse though, even at the lowest setting.

Needed a grinder for hard dry corn and this did it effortlessly in 2 minutes, on my picture this is as coarse as it goes. Could be too small if youre going for 10+kgs but it will do it.Sturdy, heavy, all cast iron, SS hopper with roughly 1.5kg capacity. The only plastic part is the cover.Shipped oiled as it should, easy to assemble, disassemble, clean. No metal fragments in finish product. This is the quality tool your great grand parents used that you can still find in working condition in antique shops.

I don’t usually write review but I am compelled to share my awful experience with this seller after purchasing the Victoria Grain Grinder. The product arrived in a deplorable state – covered in a layer of filth and oil. The teeth of the grinder were visibly damaged, clearly indicating prior use. What’s worse is that the packaging arrived half-opened, strongly suggesting a repackaged return.I’ve attached images that illustrate the appalling condition I received the product in. This is an absolute disgrace to any standard of quality control. It’s not just about a damaged item; it’s about the blatant disregard for the customer.I rated this purchase 1 star, but if I could, I would rate it 0.Consider this a warning to potential buyers – steer clear of this seller. The product quality is substandard. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere for your purchase.
